How I Passed CompTIA Security+ Exam

Embarking on the Security+ certification journey was both exciting and challenging. It required a disciplined approach and a focus on practical application. My aim was not just to pass the exam but to gain a deep understanding of security concepts and apply them in real-world scenarios. This mindset helped me maximize the value of the certification process, turning theoretical knowledge into practical skills that I could use in projects and my professional career.

Having previously completed the Certified in Cybersecurity (CC) certification from ISC², I found myself well-prepared for some aspects of the Security+ exam. The CC certification served as an excellent foundation, covering many of the fundamental topics found in Security+, albeit with a focus on management and regulation. This experience allowed me to grasp the essential cybersecurity principles quickly and gave me a head start on the Security+ material.

With a solid foundation from the CC certification and a commitment to practical learning, I approached the Security+ exam with confidence. This preparation strategy ensured that I was ready to tackle the certification’s theoretical and practical aspects, ultimately equipping me with the necessary skills.

Choosing the Right Resources

My primary study material was the official book for the Security+ SY0-701 version from CompTIA, titled The Official CompTIA Security+ SY0-701 Certification Study Guide. This guide provided a solid foundation for my studies, covering every objective of the Security+ syllabus. While I did watch a few online videos for topics I found challenging, I quickly realized the importance of sticking to a few trusted resources. Relying on too many random sources can lead to confusion and gaps in understanding.

For visual learning, I highly recommend Professor Messer’s video series. His free online course is well-organized and covers all the key topics in the Security+ exam. I also made a detailed study plan based on his videos, which helped me manage my time and ensure comprehensive coverage of all topics. I will include a link to this study plan on my website for those interested.

The Steps I Took to Pass the Exam

  • Setting a Firm Deadline: Scheduling the exam was a key step in my preparation. It created a sense of urgency and pushed me to prioritize my study time. Knowing I had a specific date to work towards kept me motivated and focused.
  • Selecting Resources: It is essential to choose three types of study resources: visual, reading, and listening. I focused mainly on reading, using the official study guide as my primary resource. When I encountered complex concepts, I turned to YouTube for supplementary explanations.
  • Creating a Study Plan: Organizing my study time was crucial. I aimed to fully understand and practically apply every concept, which took about three months. If someone is focused solely on passing the exam, it is possible to do so in one to two months, but applying the concepts practically is invaluable.
  • Staying Disciplined: Security+ is a challenging certification with fundamental concepts that require thorough understanding and dedication. Staying disciplined throughout the process was crucial for overcoming the challenges and ensuring success.

Final Thoughts

The Security+ certification was one of the most rewarding I have pursued. It expanded my theoretical knowledge and emphasized the importance of practical application. The real value of this certification lies in the ability to apply the concepts in real-world situations, which is often more important than the theory itself. The lessons I learned have greatly enhanced my skills and prepared me for future challenges in the field of cybersecurity.

By following a structured plan and focusing on theory and practice, I successfully passed the Security+ exam and gained skills that will be useful throughout my career.
